Universal, which recently sold SpongeBob to Netflix, wants to bet on Oscar season with what appears to be Hanks’ big new take, still in Greengrass’s hands after award-winning Captain Phillips, so he needs World News to come out at least in the States in the hall, to respect the rules of the Academy. As we had already told you, Universal has an agreement with the American chain AMC, thanks to which the programming window in theaters before landing in digital rental is reduced to three weeks, compared to the normal three months and a little more than the pre-Covid. The idea is therefore to present News from the world briefly only in American theaters at the end of the year, to re-enter the race for the Oscars, which in 2021 were exceptionally postponed to April 25, precisely because of the few releases due to the pandemic.
The story of World news tells of Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Hanks), who five years after the end of the American Civil War (therefore in 1870), must bring a ten-year-old Indian girl, who grew up far from her tribe, to be reunited by law with her uncles.
