Women’s Olympique Lyon suffer first league defeat in four years

The women of Olympique Lyon have their first defeat in four years ago in the Division 1 Féminine on Friday evening. The team of trainer Jean-Luc Vasseur went down 1-0 at Paris Saint-Germain.

Marie-Antoinette Katoto scored the only goal of the game in the eleventh minute. The 22-year-old Frenchwoman thus ended a series of eighty league matches in which Lyon did not lose.

The last time Lyon was defeated in the league was on December 12, 2016. Paris Saint-Germain was also responsible for the defeat: the Parisians also won 1-0 at the time.

Due to the historic victory, PSG can also call itself the leader in the Division 1 Féminine. The still unbeaten team won eight of the first nine games this season and has one point more than Olympique Lyon.

Lyon has been untouchable in France and Europe for years. Since 2007, the league title has always gone to ‘La Reine’ and the last five editions of the UEFA Women’s Champions League were also all won by Olympique Lyon..

Shanice van de Sanden was under contract with Lyon between 2017 and last summer. The Orange-international signed a two-year contract with VfL Wolfsburg in September.
