Winter weather advisory issued for northern Illinois, northwest Indiana, with snow expected.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for northern Illinois and northwest Indiana. The advisory will take effect at various times throughout the area, with anywhere from 1-to-6 inches of snow possible by Wednesday evening. Areas closest to Lake Michigan, such as Lake and Porter counties in Indiana, will remain under the advisory until midnight Thursday. In Illinois, areas south of Interstate 80 could see between 2-to-4 inches of accumulation, with the morning commute being largely impacted by the snowfall. Lake and DuPage counties, as well as north and central Cook County, will go under the advisory at 3 a.m. and will remain under the advisory until 9 p.m. McHenry, DeKalb and Kane counties will be under an advisory from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m. and should see less-intense accumulations.

The snowfall is the first of several disturbances that could bring wintry weather to the area, with another clipper system expected to arrive Friday and several more rounds of snow possible on Saturday and into Sunday. The highest accumulations are likely to occur in central Illinois and in Indiana, with Lake, Porter, Newton and Jasper counties potentially seeing 3-to-6 inches of snow. Road conditions Wednesday morning could still be hazardous, and drivers should take caution.

The National Weather Service advises that people should prepare for hazardous travel conditions, including during the morning commute. They suggest that people stay informed of the latest weather forecasts and warnings, and that those who must travel should allow extra time, be prepared for sudden changes in visibility, and use caution when driving.

The winter weather advisory is a reminder of the importance of being prepared for winter weather. People should check their vehicles for proper tire pressure and tread, make sure their windshield wipers and headlights are in good working order, and keep an emergency kit in their vehicle. Additionally, they should be aware of the weather and any advisories or warnings that are issued. By following these tips, people can help ensure their safety during wintry weather.
