Novak Djokovic is one step closer towards his 20th Grand Slam at Wimbledon. The Serb has qualified for the semifinals for tenth consecutive time, and will face Canadian Denis Shapovalov.
To be next to Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal, Djokovic must win two more London grass victories.
The world number one reached the semifinals by beating Hungarian Márton Fucsovics 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. After taking a quick 5-0 advantage on Center Court, he continued to play a challenging match. The players were also not helped by the windy conditions.
Djokovic managed to stay on his feet throughout his fiftieth quarterfinal at the grand slam.
Fucsovics was 29 years old and reached the quarterfinals in a grand slam tournament. He had won only one match at Wimbledon. Djokovic’s excellent play was decisive in the final.
After a fierce duel, Shapovalov prevails
Denis Shapovalov takes on Djokovic in the 41st semifinal of a grand-slam tournament. Karen Khachanov, the number 12, was too strong after a fierce battle with 6-43-6, 5-7 and 6-1.6-4.
Shapovalov, 22, versus Khachanov, 25 (both of whom had lost their last quarterfinals at Grand Slam tournament), fought for points with beautiful rallies. The Canadian took the initiative with 59 victories to 31 for the Russian.
The nerve-wracking fifth match was the most exciting for the junior champion 2016. Shapovalov scored at 4-4 in 7th, after missing six chances to break.
Two more quarter-finals
Roger Federer – Hubert Hurkacz, and Matteo Berrettini -Felix Auger – Aliassime are the other two quarter-finals.
