Willem II failed to reach the play-offs of the Europa League on Thursday evening. The Tilburg team was eliminated at home in the third preliminary round by Rangers FC: 0-4.

Rangers takes advantage of Ruiter’s blunder

James Tavernier took care of the opening goal of Rangers from a penalty kick halfway through the first half. A few minutes later, Ryan Kent doubled the lead and in the second half Filip Helander and Connor Goldson further increased the score.

Willem II had a number of great opportunities, but Ché Nunnely and Görkem Saglam, among others, did not have their sights set. Vangelis Pavlidis also hit the bar on behalf of the home team early in the game.

In the second preliminary round, the team of coach Adrie Koster was still 0-5 too strong for Progrès Niederkorn in Luxembourg a week ago. Rangers, the team of coach Steven Gerrard, will play in the play-offs against Galatasaray next week.

Earlier in the evening, PSV managed to reach the play-offs of the Europa League. The people from Eindhoven won 1-5 at NS Mura in Slovenia.

Willem II started the match in the Koning Willem II Stadium well and initially got the best chances. In the sixteenth minute, Pavlidis was very close to the opening goal for his team, but the Greek shot out a rebound on the crossbar.

Against the ratio, the Rangers took the lead from a penalty kick after more than twenty minutes. After Kent was touched lightly by Miquel Nelom, the ball hit the spot. The penalty was then used flawlessly by Tavernier.

Three minutes later Kent signed for the 0-2. The midfielder took advantage of a blunder by Willem II goalkeeper Robbin Ruiter, who unleashed a long shot from Alfredo Morelos, and tapped in from close range.

Willem II then went in search of the connection goal and got the perfect opportunity ten minutes before half time. Nunnely had the corner to choose after a pass from Pavlidis, but he shot goalkeeper Allan McGregor right.
