Released last year on Public TV, it is a fiction that combines professional actors with urban music references.

The Argentine series Broder is one of the ten selected for the Cannes International Series Festival, France, official competition that, following the protocols for the coronavirus, It will be held from October 9 to 14.

The series festival is a departure from the traditional film gathering that has been held more than 70 years ago in Cannes, an event that is now committed to highlighting the serial format.
AND there it will be Broder, a fiction that combines professional actors with references from urban music. It is the first hip hop series in Latin America.

What is it about? From Patagonia, the brothers Mirko (Andy Gorostiaga) and Roma (Ailín Salas) go to live in the house of their grandmother, Patria (Marta Lubos), in the suburbs of Buenos Aires, and discover that they are neighbors of El Triángulo Estudio , the place where Nucleo AKA Tintasucia, Klan, Cazzu, Rebeca Flores, MPDhela and other rappers produce “The music that makes the new generations vibrate”.

So to build your own way, Mirko and Roma are the “outsiders” who will have to overcome prejudices and the tensions that arise between his grandmother Patria, a very moody woman with few fleas, and the young people of El Tri.

Artists use their original name or nickname, but with other stories, somehow similar to those of their beginnings, when they were looking for their place and they used rap as a form of expression in the face of different adversities, starting with the economic ones.

Quicker than later, Mirko and Roma find more similarities in these cultural references than in their own grandmother, with whom they share “blood.”

Produced by Canal Encuentro and Planta Alta, Broder premiered in October 2019 on Public Television and can be seen by the platform streaming Cont.ar.

The Serie was awarded at the Festival de Buenos Aires Series 2020, in the category “best music” of the International competition. And it was also selected for the Hip Hop Film Festival in New York 2020, he Seúl Web Fest 2020 and the Marsella Web Fest 2020.

What are your high points?

It could be said that, among other issues, it effectively feeds on various aspects and characters of reality.

The universe of the protagonists includes gathering in a house converted into a recording studio, freestyle battles, graffiti and parties in an abandoned factory. Everything, at a good pace and with an interesting care of the images.

Also, it is not a production that joins the wave of what is hitting in the moment and develops a move in a picturesque way. It is made by and for members of that culture, with its vocabulary, looks and codes. It doesn’t work as a hip hop starter manual for parents who don’t understand what their kids are up to artistically.

Directed by Mauro Pérez Quinteros, Broder It consists of ten chapters of about 15 minutes and is located in natural settings, with a soundtrack at the height of the proposal.

Anyway, with its rules, Broder shows how this musical genre became a powerful form of expression among young people from the poorest neighborhoods.
