Walmart, the largest supermarket chain in the US, has decided to remove weapons and ammunition from its store shelves As a precautionary measure, after the riots in Philadelphia this week by the death of a black man, again, at the hands of the police.

“It is important to note that we only sell firearms in about half of our stores, mainly where there are large hunter rallies“A Walmart spokesman said in a statement Thursday. In total, Walmart has 4,700 stores in the US.

Both the guns and ammo are still available for purchase at the Walmart stores that sell them, which are not all, but customers will have to specifically request items rather than picking them up from the display cases themselves.

Walter Wallace Jr.’s death in Philadelphia was due to his going to the police with a knife in hand. His family says he suffered from mental illness. Many neighbors recorded it with their mobile phones and shared the videos on social networks, which sparked protests.

«We have seen some isolated riots and, as we have done on several occasions over the past years, we have recalled our firearms and ammunition from stores as a precaution for the safety of our employees and customers, “said Walmart.

Walmart has already stopped selling semi-automatic rifle ammunition after a 2019 shooting at one of its stores in El Paso, Texas, in which 23 people died. The company stopped selling assault rifles in 2015 and raised the minimum age to buy firearms and ammunition to 21, from 18, in 2018. It also stopped selling handguns everywhere but Alaska in 1993.
