Argentine investor Santiago Subotovsky told about the process that the application went through at the International Congress on Information Technology Innovation of the UAI.
Zoom was, without a doubt, one of the big winners of the different quarantines that were carried out around the world. During the pandemic, face-to-face relationships migrated to virtuality through this program that rose to fame for Covid-19, but it had already been circling for a long time. And there was a clue: “We knew that video was the new voice.”
Who assures it is the Argentine Santiago Subotovsky, one of the first to bet on this videoconferencing program, the creation of the then unknown and now famous CEO, the Chinese Eric Yuan.
“I have the advantage of having been working with the Zoom team since 2013 and since then we have worked day and night to design a system that could grow, “he said during the International Congress on Information Technology Innovation (CIITI), organized by the Inter-American Open University (UAI).
“Obviously nobody could anticipate that it was going to happen so fast, but we knew where we were going and that’s why we put together a platform that could scale,” continued the entrepreneur, who said that when he worked in the investment fund in Silicon Valley – he is a partner of Emergence Capital-, they tried to “anticipating where new innovations were going to come and what the world needed.”
“Since 2010 we have been working on the hypothesis that the world was going to need modern collaboration tools. Since then, we started to get together with all companies that did videoconferencing and that were trying to do it differently. Until we came across Zoom” , he recounted.
“I had the advantage of having grown up and having all my family and friends in Argentina, and being able to test this technology in circumstances where it people out there did not speak English or the connections were not broadband. That’s when we tested Zoom and realized that the platform had something special, “Subotovsky explained.
When he says he had something special, he means that so far not so many applications were used to interact by video. And this began to be used for issues that were not only work, but family or related to friends. Long before the pandemic, which ended up intensifying this use.
In addition, he explained that the vision was always “that video is the new voice, it’s the experience that unites the others. “” That’s why Zoom has invested so much in making the video experience super clear, consistent and scalable [que pueda crecer y convertirse en algo grande]. Having had this vision since the genesis of the company, it was possible to create not only a technological platform that could scale, but the equipment for it“, he recounted.
And furthermore, using Zoom meant that it could take a huge number of participants, something that other applications did not allow.
Regarding the next challenges, he said that what comes next is “making the customer happy.” “If all the time you are watching what the competition does, you are not watching your own game. We always look at the customer and what we see is that they always want to buy the Zoom experience. They want to have that lack of friction, to be able to click and talk to whoever they have to talk to, not deal with the complexities of technology, “he said.
Subotovsky was part of the block “Entrepreneurship and management in information technology companies” of the CIITI, an annual meeting that has been held continuously for 18 years.
“This congress is about reflect on innovation, the ability to transcend challenges and see the concept of computing as a social phenomenon of the 21st century, “said its creator, Marcelo De Vincenzi, dean of the Faculty of Technology and vice-rector of Management and Evaluation at UAI.
