Bert van Marwijk and Dick Advocaat agree very well with the appointment of Frank de Boer as coach of the Dutch national team. The fifty-year-old coach reached an agreement with the KNVB on Wednesday about a contract up to and including the 2022 World Cup.
‘He did an excellent job at Ajax’
“If the KNVB wants a young national coach and also one for the long term, I think they have made an excellent choice with Frank,” said former national coach Van Marwijk. WE. “Frank has a bond with this group of players, but can also be above it if necessary. He already had that as an assistant.”
De Boer is the successor of Ronald Koeman, who left for FC Barcelona last month. The former international has been without a club since he was fired from Atlanta United at the end of July due to disappointing results. He was also thrown out at Internazionale and Crystal Palace.
“I don’t know why things went wrong abroad,” said Van Marwijk, who managed the Orange squad from 2008 and 2012 and guided them to the World Cup final in 2010. “But I do know that he has performed excellently with Dutch players by winning four times in a row with Ajax under difficult circumstances.”
De Boer started his coaching career in 2008 as an assistant at the Oranje van Marwijk and became head coach of Ajax two years later. Under his leadership, the team from Amsterdam became national champions from 2011 to 2014.

Lawyer, who was the national coach of the Dutch national team in three periods (1992-1994, 2002-2004 and 2017), concurs with the words of Van Marwijk. “If I have followed it properly, the group of players will have insisted on a young national coach and then Frank fits the profile perfectly,” he says.
The 72-year-old Feyenoord coach believes that De Boer also deserves the appointment. “Because I think he did an excellent job at Ajax in the Netherlands. And that was not as easy as it seems at the time”, he explains.
“I don’t know why things went wrong abroad. You will have to ask him yourself. But looking at the current situation and the players group, I think that the KNVB can come up with Frank de Boer”, Lawyer concludes.
