Van de Beek excels in controlling role: ‘I don’t care where I stand’

Donny van de Beek was one of the better players of Manchester United on Tuesday. The midfielder had a controlling role in the Champions League match against Istanbul Basaksehir (4-1).

“It went well. Sometimes I play as number ten and sometimes the coach needs me in a more controlling role. It doesn’t matter to me. I also sometimes played in this position at Ajax”, Van de Beek said after the match. Old Trafford.

The midfielder, who had come over from Ajax, was left out of the base at United in recent weeks, but was in the base against Basaksehir. The English press was full of praise for the game of the seventeen-time Orange international.

“Our first half was very good, especially the first twenty minutes,” said Van de Beek. “After half time we lost too much ball and gave away some chances, but in the end we regained control and scored a fourth goal.”

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also satisfied with Van de Beek. “Just like Edinson Cavani, he is starting to get used to our way of playing. He can indeed play in multiple positions,” said the Norwegian.

After four rounds of play, United is the leader in group H. The lead over competitors Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig is three points.
