US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania are going into isolation because they have been tested positive for the corona virus, Trump reports Friday morning via Twitter.
Earlier on Friday, Trump’s adviser Hope Hicks tested positive for the corona virus, after which the president and his wife also had themselves tested. Trump announced via Twitter that they would both immediately go into isolation. “We’ll get through it together.”
The White House doctor reports that the president is doing well and that he can continue his work from his official residence. It is unclear whether Trump is showing symptoms of COVID-19.
At first, the president said he did not know whether he would be quarantined as a precaution because of Hicks’ contamination, but later said he was preparing for this.
In an interview with Fox News Trump said he and his wife have been in close contact with Hicks. On Tuesday evening, she went to the debate between Trump and his Democratic challenger Joe Biden. Hicks more often travels on the Air Force One presidential plane. So it is possible that she has infected other people in the Trump area.
In July, Trump’s national security adviser Robert O’Brien tested positive for the coronavirus. Two months earlier, Katie Miller, Vice President Mike Pence’s press secretary, was found to have been infected.
The US presidential elections will take place next month. The next debate with Democratic candidate Biden is scheduled for October 15. Due to the mandatory 14-day isolation in the US, it is not yet certain whether the debate can continue.
