Manchester United booked a difficult, but big victory in the Premier League on Saturday evening. The Red Devils won by three late goals 1-4 against Newcastle United. Chelsea gave away a win against Southampton (3-3) with the debut of Hakim Ziyech and Manchester City won the top match against Arsenal (1-0).

Chelsea loses victory with debut substitute Ziyech

Manchester United’s start in Newcastle was particularly unfortunate. Defender Luke Shaw was hit by a cross and unconsciously worked the ball into the short corner behind David de Gea, who was grounded to the ground.

United’s answer followed twenty minutes later, just after Bruno Fernandes’ goal, which was disallowed for offside. Captain Harry Maguire, who has had a particularly difficult season, made a nice hit from a corner from Juan Mata.

Ten minutes after the break, United should also have taken the lead. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team received a penalty after a foul on Marcus Rashford, but Fernandes’ attempt was stopped by Karl Darlow.

In the 76th minute, Donny van de Beek was allowed to make an appearance and with the former Ajax player in the field, United still took the lead. Fernandes was sent off on the left side on the edge of offside and curled the ball nicely into the far corner. Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Rashford even made it 1-3 and 1-4 in the final minutes.

United thus recovered at St. James’ Park from the blistering 1-6 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in early October. Solskjaer’s team remains in the lower regions with six points. Newcastle has one more point.

Chelsea seemed to have a simple game against Southampton, because after half an hour it was already 2-0 by goals from Timo Werner. Just before half time, however, Danny Ings made the connection goal at Stamford Bridge, after which Che Adams bizarrely scored the equalizer in the 57th minute thanks to goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The troubled goalkeeper, who has blundered several times this season, made a major error of judgment on a back pass and completely missed the ball. The onrushing Adams was tapped and struggled to stay upright, kept the ball just in and passed Kepa who was running back with a hard shot into the roof of the goal.

The joy at Southampton did not last long. Werner broke through on the right two minutes after the equalizing goal and passed the ball to Kai Havertz, who easily tapped in. In the 72nd minute, Ziyech – as manager Frank Lampard had already announced – was allowed to appear as a substitute.

The midfielder, taken over from Ajax, missed the first matches of the season due to a knee injury and made his long-awaited debut against Southampton. Ziyech could no longer play a significant role and gave away two points with his team in injury time. Jannik Vestergaard scored with a touched shot from a free kick.
