It will not be a day to draw conclusions, much less to foresee where or how it will be in a few months in competition, but this Tuesday, October 13, 2020 is already unforgettable for Fernando Alonso.

The Asturian landed this Tuesday in Barcelona, from the United Kingdom, to do what many had expected since in April 2019 he got off the McLaren with which he participated in the Pirelli tire tests: he returns to drive a Formula 1. He does it in a day of filming, or ‘filming day’, in which you will get behind the wheel of the Renault RS20, the car of this season.

The limitations of this type of day are many, precisely so that the teams do not take advantage of them to do serious tests. You can only do 100 kilometers in total (about 20 laps), with unofficial (exhibition) tires and other brakes that will make this car notably different from the one he drove Daniel Ricciardo up to the podium at the Nürburgring this Sunday.

However, for Alonso and for the team it is a special day because of everything that surrounds it. In the ‘warm-up’ to the full interview, the Spaniard already remembered that his first time at the wheel of the then Benetton Renault (‘grandfather’ of the current team) it occurred 20 years ago also at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Upon his arrival in Barcelona, he spoke minimally with the media. He began by analyzing the record of Lewis Hamilton, his former teammate at McLaren in 2007. “He has had a good car, a good team, a good everything and has driven exceptionally all these years. He is winning, this year he will win the seventh, next year he is supposed to win the eighth and hopefully that in 2022 we give war to some of us who entered, “he said.

As for his personal feelings for this ‘filming day’, he recalled that they have done “work with a simulator in the factory” and “it is always good check the real car It responds more or less to what you have tried virtually. “For next year, it is realistic:” In sport you win or you don’t win, and for next year we know where we are. “

“Getting behind the wheel will be an amazing feeling. I’m looking forward to doing it, it’s a privilege. It will be like a new beginning: getting used to speed, cornering, braking …”, he summarized before starting the day , which will be one of his last chances to get into the Renault before it is renowned as Alpine.

“Preparing for these tests has not been easy, due to the COVID-19 restrictions it has not been the normal preparation, not many days in the simulator, but I think we are prepared. It is only 100 kilometers, a filming day, so we will try to maximize those laps, get some useful laps and good images. I know that I will learn and discover a lot in these laps, “he said before getting on the RS20. “I take it with a very open mind, to try to learn everything I can in each kilometer,” he said.
