US President Donald Trump still refuses to admit that he lost his rival Joe Biden’s presidential election. Trump reiterated his baseless claim to be the winner on Twitter and tweeted again a few hours later, without providing concrete evidence, that electoral fraud has taken place.
‘Most votes for incumbent president ever’
The current US president writes in capitals that Republican observers were not allowed to be present when the postal votes were counted. According to Trump, millions of voting forms were mailed to people who never asked for them. As yet, nothing indicates that there is any truth in those claims, nor does the president provide any evidence.
On Saturday afternoon (Dutch time), Trump’s Democratic rival Joe Biden was named the 46th by American media president-elect (President-elect) of the United States. They did this after Biden’s victory in the swing state of Pennsylvania (20 electors). Trump was playing golf in the US state of Virginia at the time. Shortly afterwards, he left the golf course.
Trump was already known before election day that he would not give in easily. He quickly announced in a statement on Saturday that he would not acknowledge his defeat. According to him, Biden has not yet been declared the winner in many important states. There are also still lawsuits about censuses.
“We all know that Biden is rushing to declare himself the winner, and his friends in the media want to help him: they don’t want to show the real truth. The simple fact is that these elections are far from over,” reports the Trump campaign. in a statement on their website. On Monday the president will go to court.
In addition to the fact that Trump declared himself the winner for the third time this week on Saturday, he also writes that he has received 71 million votes. That, he says, is the largest number a sitting president has ever received. That claim is correct (at the time of publishing 70.6 million votes have been counted for him), but his opponent Biden got with almost 75 million more.
However, due to the American electoral system, it does not necessarily mean that the candidate with the most votes actually runs off with the winnings. That happened when Trump won in 2016: his then rival Hillary Clinton got more votes, but Trump managed to win more electoral votes.
The American president has no more press moment planned on Saturday. That would indicate that Trump will no longer speak to the media on Saturday.
