Before the start of the Turkish Grand Prix, the head of the Mercedes team Toto Wolff assured that his drivers have a very correct optimistic attitude.
Question: What can you say about the work of George Russell, who made a serious mistake in Imola, and he did not conduct yesterday’s qualification in the best way?
Toto Wolff: Self-criticism is one of the qualities of George Russell, he judges himself very harshly, this is characteristic of talented riders and helps them move forward.
Question: What plans for the future do you associate with him?
Toto Wolff: Much depends on how the next season, which he will spend with Williams, will play out. But Mercedes are trying to create all conditions for development for our riders, and George has good prospects.
Q: At the previous stage, the Mercedes team won the Constructors’ Cup for the seventh time in a row, and today Lewis Hamilton can secure his seventh championship title …
Toto Wolff: Valtteri can prevent this if he earns eight points more than Lewis. Or if Lewis does not finish, he will continue to fight and be able to win the title in one and the next stages of the season. Of course, today he must give his best, but the race will be very difficult, it will be hard to work with rubber.
Engineers always calculate the likelihood of a particular race outcome, and they believe that Lewis still has a very high chance of winning the title.
Q: There are two cars ahead of you from the Racing Point team, which uses the intellectual property of Mercedes – are you probably unhappy with this?
Toto Wolff: No! I think this is great. They have half the resources of any major team, but at Racing Point they did a great job yesterday, got the best deal with the tires and beat a fast driver like Max Verstappen. This is as it should be, because it changes the balance of power!
Question: The main task that everyone has to solve during the race is to get to the finish line. With what words did you admonish your riders before the start?
Toto Wolff: I just wished them to have fun! We usually have a slightly pessimistic attitude, but today it’s the opposite, because we have nothing to lose. Valtteri was the first to say that he was looking forward to the upcoming Grand Prix, and Lewis also confirmed this. So they have a very correct attitude.
