Portugal will not be able to defend its title in the Nations League next year. The team of captain Cristiano Ronaldo lost 1-0 to France on Saturday and therefore misses the final round of the prestigious national tournament.
N’Golo Kanté was the match winner with the only goal of the match. Chelsea’s controlling midfielder took advantage of a slipper from Portuguese goalkeeper Rui Patrício in the 54th minute, who couldn’t control a shot from Adrien Rabiot. Kanté could simply tap in the rebound.
Due to the minimal victory over Portugal, which won the first edition of the Nations League last year at the expense of the Dutch national team, France was the first country to qualify for the final round of the Nations League. As the leader in group 3 of League A, the French are no longer available. In the same group, Sweden averted relegation to League B by a 2-1 victory over Croatia.
The four group winners in League A of the Nations League grab a ticket for the Final Four of the prestigious country tournament, which will be played in October next year in the country that wins the group from the Dutch national team.
That could be Poland, Italy or the Netherlands itself. The sixth and final group matches are scheduled for next week. The last numbers of the groups are relegated to League B.
