The GGDs of the five regions in the east of the Netherlands where a trial run with CoronaMelder took only a quarter of the tests as a direct result of the app. These are tests of people who said they had received a warning from the corona app. However, more than 75 percent of those tests were carried out by GGDs in other parts of the country, where the app is not formally used, the Ministry of Health reports Press.
National rollout of the app awaits the Senate
In the first three weeks that the corona app was tested, 1,111 people had themselves tested at the GGD because they indicated that they had received a report.
271 of those tests were carried out by the GGDs in the pilot regions in Drenthe, Overijssel and North, East and South Gelderland. Anyone who turns out to be infected with the corona virus can, together with the GGD, warn other app users who have been in the area.
These are numbers up to September 6. At the time, a warning from the CoronaMelder was enough to request a test. Even those who did not (yet) have complaints could in that case have themselves tested at their GGD. Formally, this was only possible in the five pilot regions, but the GGDs decided to take all reports seriously.
The Ministry of Health spokesman says he suspects that three quarters of the tests (840 in total) took place outside the five pilot regions, because most of the infections are outside those regions, but did not provide further details.
Receiving the report is not limited to the five GGD regions. For example, anyone who has visited from outside the pilot regions can receive a report after close contact with a resident who later turns out to be infected.
The trial period of the corona app started on August 17 and will formally run until the app is put into use nationwide. For this, a necessary law still has to be discussed in the Senate. This is expected to happen early next week.
Since September 12, a CoronaMelder warning is no longer enough to request a test. Just as before the start of the trial in the east of the Netherlands, the GGD will in principle only accept test requests from people who experience (mild) complaints related to the corona virus.
