Aston Villa are the only Premier League team that has not scored points so far. Last season, they had more than enough to save space. What happened?
– I think Dean Smith has found a collective with good balance and complementary skills, says VG expert Tor-Kristian Karlsen.
He is particularly interested in the strong central line:
– The central line is both robust backwards – especially with newly acquired Emiliano Martínez in goal, the cliff Tyrone Mings in the fourth back and Douglas Luiz in the middle – and has creativity and intelligent players forward in the field. From John McGinn to Ross Barkley and Jack Grealish.
Aston Villa have so far 3.0 goals on the right track and 0.5 goals against per game. This supports Karlsen’s reasoning.
– In addition, the team has very good speed on the edges and many players in the team who can challenge, pass opponents and transport the ball at a high pace – then I think of Barkley, Trezeguet and Grealish and also Bertrand Traore. Not to mention Ollie Watkins promotion. And with many such types, you become unpredictable and sharp, states the VG expert.
Tor-Kristian Karlsen believes that they have found a style of play that suits the skills of the team well.
– Aston Villa rarely have more than 40% -45% ball possession, but when they win the ball, they are very strong to adapt and the fast, direct, offensive players are able to take advantage of the rooms that open up. Previously, Villa appeared more elaborate and there was much more ball possession, without seeing a clear plan.
A 0-1 loss to Stoke in the League Cup is the only “stain” on Aston Villa’s autumn so far.
