American scientists have found “overwhelming evidence” that inhalation of coronavirus in aerosols, particles smaller than droplets, represents “a main route in the transmission of COVID-19”.

COVID-19 spreads very easily from person to person

The ease with which a virus spreads from one person to another can vary. The virus that causes COVID-19 seems to spread more effectively than the flu but not as effective as measles, which is among the most contagious viruses known to affect people.

COVID-19 is commonly spread with close contact

The people who are physically close (within 2 meters) of a person with COVID-19 or who have direct contact with that person are at increased risk of infection.

When people with COVID-19 cough, sneeze, sing, speak or breathe, produce respiratory droplets. These droplets can range in size from larger droplets (some of which are visible) to smaller droplets. Small droplets can also form particles when they dry very quickly in the air stream.

Respiratory droplets cause infection when inhaled or deposited on mucous membranes, like those that line the inside of the nose and mouth.

As respiratory droplets move away from the person with COVID-19, the concentration of these droplets decreases. The largest drops fall from the air due to gravity. The smallest droplets and particles become airborne.

Over time, the amount of infectious virus in droplets it decreases.

COVID-19 can sometimes be spread by airborne transmission.

Some infections can be spread by exposure to the virus in small droplets and particles that can remain in the air for minutes to hours. These viruses can infect people who are more than 2 meters away from the infected person or after that person has left the space.

This type of spread known as airborne transmissionand it is an important way of spreading infections such as tuberculosis, measles and chicken pox.

Exists evidence that, under certain conditions, people with COVID-19 appear to have infected others who were more than 2 meters away away.

These transmissions occurred inside enclosed spaces that had inadequate ventilation.

Sometimes the infected person breathed heavily, for example, while sang or exercised.

Under these circumstances, scientists believe that the number of droplets and smaller infectious particles produced by people with COVID-19 had a concentration enough like to spread the virus to other people.

The infected people shared with the infected person or were in shortly after they left.

Available data indicate that it is much more common for the virus that causes COVID-19 to spread through close contact with a person who has COVID-19 than through airborne transmission.

COVID-19 is spread less frequently through contact with contaminated surfaces

Respiratory droplets can fall on surfaces and objects. A person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their mouth, nose, or eyes.

COVID-19 is rarely transmitted between people and animals

It appears that the virus that causes COVID-19 can be transmitted from people to animals in some situations. CDC is aware of a small number of pets around the world, including cats and dogs, which are reported to be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19, primarily after close contact with people with COVID-19. Right now, the risk of COVID-19 spreading from animals to people is considered low.

Tips to protect yourself from the virus

Scientists launch a series of recommendations to protect yourself from the virus:

  • Stay at least 6 feet away from others, whenever possible. This is very important to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a mask when you are around other people. This helps reduce the risk of spread by both close contact and airborne transmission.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
  • Avoid crowded indoor spaces and make sure indoor spaces are adequately ventilated by bringing in as much outside air as possible. In general, being outdoors and in well-ventilated spaces reduces the risk of exposure to infectious respiratory droplets.
  • Stay home and stay away from others when you are sick.
  • Routinely clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.
