The US president was asking the WikiLeaks founder to say how he accessed some 20,000 emails from the Democratic Party in 2016.

US President Donald Trump has offered to pardon Julian Assange if the WikiLeaks founder reveals the source who illegally accessed emails from the Democratic National Convention before the 2016 election, according to a communication sent to a London court. this Friday.

Assange’s lawyer, Jennifer Robinson, made her claim during another trial hearing in London to decide whether the WikiLeaks founder is extradited to the United States, where He is accused of conspiring and violating the espionage law for publishing hundreds of thousands of official documents and U.S. Confidentials in 2010 and 2011.

Robinson said he oversaw a meeting, in 2017, in which former Republican lawmaker Dana Rohrabacher and Charles Johnson, an adviser with strong ties to Trump’s election campaign, made the offer, the Reuters news agency reported.

“The proposal made by Rohrabacher requested that Mr. Assange identify the source of the publications before the 2016 elections in exchange for some form of clemency,” Robinson said in a witness statement in court.

In 2016, just months before the November elections, in which Trump won the presidency, WikiLeaks published nearly 20,000 internal emails from leaders of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) that showed how the party leadership tried to benefit the candidate Hillary Clinton facing Senator Bernie Sanders during the primary process that year.

The e-mails were stolen by hackers members of the Russian intelligence services, According to an independent investigation conducted in the United States by special counsel Robert Mueller after the country’s secret services said that Moscow had interfered in the elections to benefit Trump over Clinton.

According to attorney Robinson, the offer by Congresswoman Rohrabacher and adviser Johnson was rejected by Assange.

At the time, the Australian journalist was living in the Ecuadorian embassy as an asylee, thus avoiding extradition to Sweden, where he was facing alleged charges of sexual abuse.

Simultaneously, Mueller was investigating Russian interference in the United States elections and Trump-Russia ties.

“The proposal made by Rohrabacher requested that Mr. Assange identify the source of the publications before the 2016 elections in exchange for some form of pardon,” Robinson denounced in a statement as a witness in court, reported the BBC.

For Assange’s lawyer, who attended the meeting, it was a direct, explicit and made on behalf of President Trump.

“They said that President Trump was aware and that he approved of them coming to meet with Assange to discuss the proposal,” he emphasized, adding that the information “would be of interest, value and help to the president.”

Robinson noted that Rohrabacher described the offer as a “win-win solution”, as Assange would obtain the “pardon, guarantee or commitment” to avoid an accusation, in exchange for the source that made the illegal entry to the servers of the DNC emails, allowing the 49-year-old to “get on with his life.”

“He said that speculation was damaging relations between the United States and Russia, that it was reviving the old Cold War policy and that the United States’ greatest interest was to resolve the issue,” he said.

It is not the first time that Assange’s legal team has made these statements, which have already been denied so much by the White House as for Rohrabacher, who stated that the visit made to the journalist in 2017 was within the framework of the investigation.
