PSV, AZ and Feyenoord will go into the draw for the group stage of the Europa League on behalf of the Netherlands on Friday in Geneva. PSV is in pot 1, while AZ and Feyenoord have to make do with a place in pot 3.
Pool phase is completed in a short time
It is surprising that PSV is one of the best clubs in pot 1. The classification is made on the basis of the UEFA coefficient list and in view of that ranking, a place in pot 2 seemed almost certain for the Eindhoven team.
On Thursday evening FC Basel, FC Copenhagen and Sporting CP – clubs that are on the coefficient list higher than PSV – surprisingly lost in the play-offs. As a result, a spot was still available for PSV in pot 1.
That is beneficial for the team of trainer Roger Schmidt, because it means that clubs such as Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, AS Roma, Napoli, Benfica and Bayer Leverkusen are avoided.
Based on the points they have achieved in Europe in recent years, AZ and Feyenoord belong to the clubs in pot 3, together with AC Milan and Rangers FC. So they do encounter a club from pot 1.
PSV, AZ and Feyenoord belong to the Dutch delegation in Europe this season, together with Ajax. Ajax was linked to Liverpool, Atalanta and FC Midtjylland in the Champions League draw on Thursday.
Just like in the Champions League, the group stage of the Europa League will be completed faster due to the calendar disrupted by the corona crisis. The six rounds of play are on October 22 and 29, November 5 and 26 and December 3 and 10.
The draw for the group stage of the Europa League in Geneva starts on Friday at 1 p.m.
