Misinformation is a major problem in the online environment, especially on social networks. Fortunately, while Facebook is closing its eyes, Twitter may have found the solution.

Twitter has been quite effective in the last year in fixing the problem of misinformation and spreading false news. In addition to being the first to refuse to publish election ads in the context of the US election campaign, Twitter has branded several posts by President Donald Trump and his campaign team as misleading or erroneous.

Now, the company has begun mass testing for Birdwatch, an online tool designed to further the fight against misinformation. It’s a combination of moderation and reporting from Twitter users.

Matt Navarra is a social media consultant and posted a few screenshots on Twitter to explain how the new Birdwatch works on mobile. Apparently, the tool will be integrated into the context menu of each Twitter post, behind the glasses frame on the bottom right. Also there you will find Mute, Block or Report buttons.

When a user adds a post to Birdwatch, it reports it for review by a moderator. Through the same mechanism, someone can attach notes to a tweet, in a public or private manner, just for him. Ideally, it would be to explain in a few words why you reported a tweet, to make life easier for the moderators, through those notes. In the main menu of Twitter, you will also find Birdwatch Notes, where all the notifications you have made in the past about certain posts will be aggregated. It remains to be seen whether extremists will not find an effective way to abuse Birdwatch and make it useless.
