It is after the announcement of a new trial vaccine effective against covid-19 in almost 95%. But the restrictions continue in the face of a rampant pandemic.

From Europe to the United States, countries prepare for vaccination campaigns after the announcement of a new trial vaccine effective against covid-19 by almost 95%, but restrictions continue in the face of a rampant pandemic, as shown by Austria, which has been reconfigured since Tuesday.

In the United States, states and cities, from New York in the east to Seattle in the west, they reimposed measures in recent days to try to stop the second wave of the coronavirus. The number of cases in the country, the most mourning in the world, exceeds 11 million, with more than 247,000 deaths.

President-elect Joe Biden he warned that “more people could die” if Donald Trump refuses to cooperate with the transition team in a national response to COVID-19, including the rapid distribution of vaccines.

Global hopes of overcoming the covid-19 pandemic rose on Monday when the American laboratory Moderna said its experimental vaccine showed an effectiveness of almost 95%. A week earlier, the American laboratories Pfizer and the German BioNTech stated that their vaccine, also in the experimental phase, was 90% effective.

In the United States, the two vaccines could be licensed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the first half of December, Moncef Slaoui, scientific manager of Operation “Warp Speed”, created by Trump to immunize the American population, said Monday.

This would allow 20 million Americans to be vaccinated, with priority undoubtedly for the elderly and at risk, from the second week of December, and then to another 25 million per month from January, he said.

The World Health Organization (WHO) welcomed this “encouraging” news, but warned that months to go for widespread availability and expressed concern about the increase in cases in many countries.

“Countries that are letting the virus spread uncontrollably are playing with fire,” said WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

The pandemic also hits Russia hard, which registered a daily death record with 442 deceased, while it worsens in the regions, with numerous examples of overflowing hospitals and full morgues.

On Monday, the Minister of Health, Mikhail Murashko, stated that 84% of hospital beds dedicated to the coronavirus were busy.

In Italy, where there were more than 500 deaths a day from covid-19, health authorities said Tuesday that they inspected more than 230 residences for the elderly, and in 37 of them they found violations. Four of those establishments had to be closed.

In the United Kingdom, the country most affected by the pandemic in Europe with more than 52,000 deaths and which has England and Wales confined for the second time, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is once again in quarantine.

Johnson, who was seriously ill from covid-19 in April, was isolated as a precaution after meeting with an infected parliamentarian.

The pandemic has caused more than 1,328,000 deaths since late December, according to an AFP tally on Tuesday.

Latin America and the Caribbean, with 12,101,300 infections and more than 425,000 deaths, is the region with the most deaths in the world.
