Winemaking, irrigation, walkie-talkies, anti-theft tools – these industries have existed for decades and even thousands of years. How can the Internet of Things (IoT) change them?

For a winegrower in southern Russia, Interra has installed sensors on trucks carrying grapes. The sensors weigh the grapes right inside the machine and transfer data to a software platform. The driver and trailer identification system helps to manage the load of the equipment.

In practice, it looks something like this: The platform finds out that the driver transports a specific grape variety and automatically directs it to a place for unloading.

The sensors are also installed on grape presses, providing all the information about wine production.

Safe driving of the crane

For many years, work with this equipment has been regulated by the safety standards established for a specific crane model and by the site rules.

However, directly at work, a crane operator could ignore any rule and use the equipment as he saw fit.

The Mexican company Cellamerica has built a system that monitors the inclination of the cranes, its angles and its movement.

If the angles change too abruptly or an operator moves around the location with the arm raised, the engine will stop automatically. To restart it, the operator must first fix the problem.

Reinventing the radio

With a classic set of functions, portable radios have the classic disadvantages – a limited number of channels and primitive location monitoring functionality.

The Yollar company in Azerbaijan has revised the concept of portable radio.

First, they designed new equipment models. Second, the company has implemented a complete dispatching center for the customer to listen to any channel, receive notifications, track location, control devices remotely and more.

Smart irrigation

Smart farming is one of the agricultural trends that cannot be imagined without smart irrigation systems.

Interra has developed a special IoT solution to solve irrigation problems. Each machine is equipped with devices for motion control, data collection from sensors and remote control. The data is transferred to the Wialon system for further processing.

The company has reduced maintenance costs, increased the return on investment in irrigation machines and can now provide high quality crops.

Fighting Covid-19

X-Telia (Canada) has created a solution to combat the spread of the virus on huge construction sites.

An application installed on cleaning devices’ smartphones scans a QR code on the surface of objects that have been cleaned and disinfected.

As soon as a cleaning agent finishes working, he or she scans the code, and the information in the mobile application is sent to cloud storage and presented to the customer in the form of reports – what was cleaned and when.

The X-Telia solution allowed the client, a construction company, to ensure safe working conditions for 2,000 people and to comply with strict regulatory health requirements.

“As part of this year’s IoT competition, we have demonstrated the opportunities that the IoT and telematics industries offer to the business,” said Aliaksandr Kuushynau, head of Gialam’s Wialon division. “We are pleased to see that all of this has been implemented on the Wialon platform.”

“We’ve seen great projects, from using IoT in aviation to automating cattle feed in Mexico, from fighting Covid-19 to geological research in Siberia. These projects demonstrate new horizons that technologies open to us in case of their correct implementation in the processes of any company ”.
