New direction, falling budget and the unfortunate 2020 that forced the Torino Film Festival 2020, the first of the new direction Stefano Francia of Celle, to present itself only via streaming.
“The star of the Mole”. She will be the prima donna, the godmother or call her as you like, of the 38th edition of Turin Film Festival, presented today at a press conference via zoom. The constant references of the new artistic director were not enough Stefano Francia of Celle (who also felt sorry for this, joking, with the future winner of the first prize Stella della Mole, Isabella Rossellini), we are reminded by the theme song and the spot conceived and produced by RAI, which confirms itself as a partner of the festival, in which the star comes alive and goes around the symbolic places of the Savoy city.
It will be a particular edition, that’s for sure, not in presence, but digitally. “Innovative”, defined the director of the Cinema Museum, Domenico De Gaetano, using a term now in vogue for all the unfortunately distant events of this unfortunate 2020. “Not simply a streaming festival”, but a container of events, masterclasses, meetings with the authors. For now, all via streaming, with a budget down to less than 1.2 million euros, which even aims to “do a lot to achieve the goal of equality of the UN Agenda 2030”.
To do so he chose a female jury only, composed of five personalities from the cinema, but also from the international commitment to civil rights, from which also the deputy director, the Iranian lawyer, comes Fedra Fateh. Competition Torino 38 is made up of 12 titles, six by female directors, “Who represent not only young talents and respect gender equality, but also different genres, in a cinematographic sense, from traditional to experimental”. The only Italian is the debut of Alessandro Grande, appreciated author of short films, entitled Regina, with Francesco Montanari. There will then be a section out of competition, the usual TFF Doc, edited by Davide Oberto, and a space dedicated to genre cinema, The rooms of Rol, in homage to the Turin psychic, who seems to us the most interesting, at least on paper.
A festival anchored to the local Turin and Piedmontese reality, in short, which had to give up some films scheduled for release for the next few months and now remained in a distribution limbo due to the second wave of the coronavirus, even if for the director “they are only a few titles”. Over 4000 of them were viewed by “a very heterogeneous selection committee” to choose 133, 64 feature films, of which 29 first works and 52 world premieres. “Three things I like to do more than anything else,” said the director Stefano France, “Seeing films in a movie theater, listening to an opera aria in a high-level theater, possibly at the San Carlo in Naples, and leading a group of people going to the mountains”.
There will then be masterclasses, inside “a wonderful set inspired by the many riches of the mass and of the cinema museum, from 10 in the morning to dinner time, with insights, live events. Some films of the Torino Film Festival 2020 will then be proposed by Nanni Moretti, already in the past director of the event, on his proposal, as soon as it will be possible, in his cinema, the Nuovo Sacher in Rome, before being presented also in the Turin cinemas.
Appointment with the Torino Film Festival from 20 to 28 November, for an edition in line with this unfortunate 2020 to say the least. We refer you to the event website for the complete program.
