The European Commission (EC) warned this Wednesday about the severity of the second wave of coronavirus in the European Union (EU) and called on member states “coordination” in approach and “courage” in measures to “save lives.” Von der Leyen has identified two great enemies in the fight against the pandemic: “the virus and the fatigue of citizens due to the restrictions and measures adopted”.
“The situation of covid-19 is very serious (…) All the data points to a strong spread of the virus throughout Europe. We are in the depths of the second wave. Just last week a figure of 1 million confirmed infections was reached. In the coming weeks these figures will continue to increase and very rapidly, “said the president of the EC, Ursula von der Leyen at a press conference.
The president of the Community Executive added that the EU must “step up” your response and called on Member States to “work closely together as” the courageous steps to be taken now will help save lives and protect livelihoods. ”
The EC has proposed the use of antigen tests, which although they are less reliable, are faster, share more information between institutions, suspend the VAT on imports of medical material and create vaccination strategies, among other proposals.
