The numbers don’t lie. The Czech Republic, with a population of 10.7 million, registered as many as 3,129 new cases of coronavirus on Thursday. The balance of the last two weeks puts it among the three worst corona countries in Europe after Spain and France.
The blow is particularly severe for the Czech government, as it had already had time to stand in popularity because of its excellent corona treatment. The country was the first with neighboring Slovakia to force citizens to wear face masks in public places, and quite effective restrictive measures kept the epidemic under control.
At the start of the second wave, Vojtech had called for the prompt implementation of the same measures, but the Prime Minister Andrej Babiš did not agree to them.
Admittedly, Babish realized that he had made a mistake and corrected his decision – helplessly too late.
Now the second wave is raging at full power, and Vojtech, who has experienced its mission impossible, leaves its place.
– I have nothing to be ashamed of, he said when announcing his resignation.
Babiš is one of the richest people in the Czech Republic, but that didn’t stop him from making misjudgments with the second wave. Initially, the Prime Minister encouraged citizens to be brave in the face of a viral threat. He also told representatives of the World Health Organization to “keep quiet” when they expressed concern about the situation in the Czech Republic.
Vojtech’s resignation also meant the government was unable to declare a planned state of emergency. It is estimated that up to 8,000 new infections a day can soon be diagnosed in the country.
