The space opera Creators – The Past, first work by Piergiuseppe Zaia and the first made in Italy colossal, will be released in cinemas on 8 October, including William Shatner among the actors.

Creators – The Past is the first chapter of a planned trilogy (the second film, Creators – The Present, is already in preparation), a colossal sci-fi fantasy of great ambitions, which finally arrives at the cinema on October 8th, seven months after the scheduled and postponed release for obvious reasons and the publication of a sister novel. Almost a year ago, a Lucca Comics & Games, we had met his enthusiastic writers and co-writers: the director Piergiuseppe (Beppe) Zaia, to her debut feature, and the actress and “goddess ex machina” of the operation, also making her film debut, Eleonora Fani, who, to the delight of fans, defied the cold and rain under layers of alien makeup and skimpy shoes as Lady Airre. Despite the typically American layout, the international cast and some names of world experience in the crew – such as the assistant director Patrick Kinney, which boasts a long collaboration with Steven Spielberg and other big names, and the Hollywood colorist Walter Volpatto – this film, with which the director, who comes from the world of music, and the co-writer and actress – psychotherapist, theatrical actress, scholar of alternative worlds, symbolism and archetypes, and creator of psychomimesis, a method that uses theater to tackle problems psychological – they intend to relaunch a genre absent from our screens in Italy (at least in this size), it is in fact entirely Italian production, made independently and (Zaia is keen to underline) without sponsors, with national workers and filmed between Ivrea, Val D’Aosta, Venice and the Biella area in 5k with Red cameras, with a very long post-production process for visual effects and sound in Dolby Atmos and a soundtrack, composed by Zaia himself, of 75 themes, published in a disc with 24 long version tracks.

Nothing was left to chance, not even the voice actors who have the famous voices of Luca Ward e Mario Cordova. Before dedicating another study to the film, let’s start with the cast, which includes the well-known English actor Bruce Payne (Lord Kal, also credited as associate producer, assistant director and dialogue coach on the film), Gérard Depardieu, the Italian American Marc Fiorini, Jennifer Mischiati, the Norwegian singer and youtuber Pellek, the ace of parkour Sebastien foucan (see initial sequence of Casino Royale) e Daniel McVicar, ma especially him, the first and best Captain Kirk of Star Trek, William Shatner, who plays one of the eight Creators, Lord Oghma. But before we talk about him, let’s tell you something more about movie plot, as he explained it to us in Lucca Eleonora Fani, which developed the initial idea of Beppe Zaia.

Creators – The Past, ma chi sono i Creators?

The Creators are 8 aliens who rule the universe, move on different planes of reality and rule the cosmos, including planet earth. They meet at the beginning of the film in a kind of meeting, where they must decide how to exploit a galactic alignment that is taking place. There are all but one, Lord Kanaff, who is the creator who rules the planet earth. As always happens, the Earth is the most messed up, human beings are unruly, and the Creator of the planet is evidently a character who has failed to hold the reins of the situation. He does not show up at the meeting and does not deliver the Lens, which is a sphere and also a hard disk, an alien object that contains the memory and even a little consciousness of the reference planet. The other Creators decide to send one of them, Lady Airre, my character, to find him and Lens. She also has children on planet earth, hybrids, the result of genetic experiments and the human side of the character is also developed, a mother who cares about their life. From there begins an adventure filmed in locations built in computer graphics (3D) but also in real locations, because the Lens was thrown into the Ivrea Carnival, transformed into orange. This is in fact the period in which the story takes place and there are also scenes set during the Venice carnival.

William Shatner è Lord Oghma in Creators – The Past

At the beautiful and lively age of 88, the Canadian made his first entirely made in Italy film William Shatner, an actor with a prodigious career, on the scene for almost 70 years (!), who in addition to his cult role, that of Captain / Commander Kirk in the classic series of Star Trek and in the first films for the cinema, it includes other characters who have remained in the hearts of viewers such as those played in many episodes of On the edge of reality, Doctor Kildare, T. J. Hooker, Boston Legal e TekWar, which he also created, to name but a few. A great fan of science fiction and author of comics, Shatner, an actor of Shakespearean training, appeared less often in the cinema, where, however, as a young man he interpreted Alexi Karamazov in the film based on the novel by Dostoevsky of Richard Brooks and starred in the pioneering film about racism Hatred explodes in Dallas, of Roger Corman. Shatner also has the record of having performed the first (and only) film in Esperanto of history, horror Incubus. After reading the script, Zaia said, the actor enthusiastically accepted to be part of the film, where we see him in the role of Creator Lord Oghma. Enthusiastic by nature, he also made himself available for the sequel and was welcomed in Italy with all the honors due to a character of his caliber. Moments of tension, the authors witty told us, occurred when he was expected in a restaurant (where with great difficulty he had been made to find the coveted Sardinian porceddu … in the Biella area) and their traces were lost. Then it turned out that the assistant, sent to pick him up in the limo, had convinced the driver to make a detour to take him to the house of his parents who were waiting for him to take pictures with him and give him bottles of wine, the power of celebrity. ! Prepared and attentive on the set, with a great knowledge also of the technical aspects, of the lighting and of the shots, Shatner has lived up to his reputation as a lovable and witty man and has also sent a video, which we show you, to announce the release of Creators – The Past on October 8 and invite fans to come and see it.
