Russia is clearly tightening its corona guidelines. The reason is that a new record number of daily COVID-19 deaths were reported on Tuesday (320), and authorities believe the situation threatens to get out of hand if there is no change.
From Wednesday onwards, face masks will become mandatory in public transport, crowds, taxis and lifts. In addition, the authorities banned all events between 11 pm and noon. Cafes and restaurants also have to keep their doors closed during that time.
According to statistics, Russia has the fourth highest number of coronavirus infections in the world (more than 1.5 million), but the number of deaths (26,589) has remained relatively low compared to many other countries.
The country’s coronavirus center remains firmly in the capital, Moscow, where all those over 65 have been asked to stay at home.
At the beginning of the pandemic, the Russians also experienced one of the strictest curfews in the world. However, it was abandoned because of the Victory Day parade in June.
