Ferrari is “struggling” with the luxury problem, with three of their upbringers performing well in Formula 2 this year – Mick Schumacher leading the race, followed by Callum Ilott’s second and even Russian talent, the current fifth Robert Svarcman, not to be missed.
All three are promising riders, but only one of them can get to F1 in 2021, with the Scuderia only getting one seat for Ferrari partner Haas. The F1 trade press has been treating Schumacher as the choice for weeks, but Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto says the decision has not yet been made.
“I don’t think we’re waiting for the (Formula 2 season-closing) race in Bahrain or Abu Dhabi, I think we’ll make the decision in a few weeks. As we said, there is not enough space for all three of them. I think all three are doing nicely in Formula 2. They have yet to finish the season, now they are focusing on the next races in Bahrain. They are all competing for the championship title, which is very important to them. ”
“They will still have the opportunity to lead the first free practice in Abu Dhabi, maybe even on the youth test, but we will base our decision on how they have performed so far, how they have developed, what potential they have.”
“The goal isn’t simply to push them into Formula 1, but to drive to Ferrari one day, to sit in the red car, the way to get there is less important. There will be someone who will drive an F1 car next year, and we will organize different opportunities for the others. ”
Schumacher, a Formula 2 front-runner with the most valuable name, feels ready to make his F1 debut.
“Throughout the last few years, my goal has been to become a better racer and I am also happy with my progress. That’s why I feel like I’m clearly ready for Formula 1 now. ”
“I’ve always really wanted to be an F1 driver, everything is determined by that goal for me. For now, though, I’m focusing on Formula 2, we have two more weekends ahead of me, I want to close the season strongly. I’m leading the tournament and I wish it was that way in the end. ”
