Thomas Haldenwang, who has been in charge of the agency for two years, will not disclose the details of the people he came in contact with, according to the quoted source.
He is in quarantine at home, where he will continue to work, BfV said. The agency added that a crisis cell had been formed to ensure the smooth operation of the service.
Thomas Haldenwang attended the last public event a few days ago, when he gave a presentation on the rise of extremism.
Germany has registered more than 5,000 new cases of COVID-19 in 24 hours, for the first time since April, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for disease control announced on Wednesday, reports dpa.
Figures released by the German agency on Wednesday show that 5,132 new COVID-19 infections were reported, an increase of more than 1,000 cases from Tuesday, when 4,122 infections were reported.
A total of 334,585 cases of COVID-19 have been reported since the beginning of the pandemic and 9,677 people have died in Germany after contracting the new coronavirus.
One week ago, German health authorities reported 2,828 new infections.
Currently, the figures have returned to the same level as in mid-April, but below those reached at the peak of the pandemic in late March and early April, when Germany reported more than 6,000 new cases daily.
However, a much larger number of tests are currently being performed than at the beginning of the year – and thus more cases of COVID-19 are detected.
Although the number of coronavirus patients in intensive care units has increased considerably in recent days, it remains low overall. According to official data released on Tuesday, about 620 patients with COVID-19 received intensive care, compared to about 450 a week earlier.
