The ‘Minister’ of Territory and Sustainability, Damià Calvet, announced this Thursday the stoppage of an incinerator construction project In the town of Cercs (Barcelona).
Calvet explained that the Territorial Commission for Urban Planning of Central Catalonia has issued a unfavorable urban report to this project for a waste energy recovery plant in the municipality of Cercs.
“The processing of this project is stopped due to urban incompatibility. The Generalitat will not process it,” said the ‘minister’ in a telematic appearance with the president of the Berguedà County Council, Josep Lara. The official reason is that the land where it was expected to be built is not in urban order and, therefore, a direct urban planning license cannot be granted, “as Calvet explained.
It is the project that the company EM Spain Waste & Treatment registered last December through the portal of the Generalitat Virtual Office of Procedures to request environmental authorization for the activity, located in the old facilities of the Cercs thermal power plant, closed in 2011.
The initiative had aroused great opposition in the territory, and the majority of city councils in the region had spoken out against it. As a result of the rejection, the Anti Incinerator Platform was created which, once they have heard the Government’s announcement that the plant will not go ahead, has celebrated the decision.
