According to preliminary results from a study, regular consumption of hot peppers could have major medical benefits, including a reduced risk of heart disease, cancer and a longer lifespan in general. Thus, this food practically makes you live longer.

The results have not yet been evaluated and published in an academic journal, but will be presented at an American Heart Association (AHA) conference beginning Friday, and the paper is based on extensive data. In the analysis, scientists cumulated the results of about 4,729 studies on the health outcomes of including hot peppers in a diet that covered a total of over 570,000 participants.

“We were surprised to find that in these previously published studies, regular consumption of hot peppers was associated with a general reduction in the risk of all causes of cardiovascular disease and cancer mortality,” said Dr. Bo Xu, lead author of the study and a cardiologist at Cleveland Clinic’s Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute, in a Press release AHA. He points out that dietary factors can play an important role in overall health.

How the study about this food went

Specifically, the analysis found that those who ate hot peppers had a 26% lower relative risk of dying from cardiovascular disease than those who rarely or did not eat this food, as well as a 23% decrease in cardiovascular disease. risk of cancer death. However, scientists have observed a 25% reduction in the risk of dying from any cause.

To clarify, these figures deal with relative to absolute risks, so I describe the change in risk between two groups – it does not necessarily mean that the consumption of hot peppers will reduce the chances of dying from heart disease by 26%, but rather the shares of a group – the group that ate peppers – are 26% higher better than the other.

But because scientists were only looking at trends identified by other studies, each with its own parameters and conditions, they could not draw a causal link between the consumption of hot peppers and improved health.

“The exact reasons and mechanisms that could explain our conclusions, however, are currently unknown,” Dr. Xu said in a statement. “Therefore, it is impossible to state conclusively that the consumption of hot peppers can prolong life and reduce deaths, especially due to cardiovascular factors or cancer. More research is needed, especially evidence from controlled studies, to confirm these preliminary findings. “
