In October 2003 in Harvard University, the student Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg), after being left by the girl Erica Albright (Rooney Mara), has the idea of creating a site to vote for the beauty of college students.
Over the course of the night, Mark downloads photos and names of all the students and asks his best friend Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield) to provide him with an algorithm for the creation of the site, which in a few hours comes to life, with the name of FaceMash.com.

Mark begins to work for the two brothers as a programmer for their website Harvard Connection, but the young man already has in mind to create something more ambitious and talks to his best friend Eduardo about the idea of Thefacebook, an exclusive online social network for all Harvard students where they can share their information securely. In the spring of 2004 the new social network began to gain popularity, triggering the jealousy of the brothers Winklevoss they denounce Zuckerberg for stealing their idea. That same summer, Mark moves the business to Palo Alto, California, while Eduardo stays on the East Coast to seek out financiers for their new business. But soon disagreements and clashes will arise between the two friends that will lead to a tough legal battle over the paternity of Facebook.
