The European Union refuses to recognize Alexander Lukashenko as president of Belarus the day after he assumed his sixth presidential term, he announced this Thursday the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell.

“The election of August 9 was neither free nor fair. The European Union does not recognize the falsified results. Consequently, the supposed” investiture “of September 23 and the new mandate invoked by Alexander Lukashenko do not have any democratic legitimacy” and ” they directly contradict the will of broad sectors of the Belarusian population, “Borrell said in a statement.

The United States already said Wednesday that it does not recognize Alexander Lukashenko as the legitimate president of Belarus. “The August 9 elections were neither free nor fair. The announced results were fraudulent and lacking in legitimacy,” a State Department spokesman said. “The United States cannot regard Alexander Lukashenko as the legitimate president” of Belarus.
