Instagram has announced that it will automatically hide negative comments on posts, a measure integrated into a series of updates that Facebook plans to reduce online aggression and harassment.
Instagram has tested the feature in recent days and said it will target comments that users have reported as inappropriate in the past.
Users can see hidden comments by clicking the “View hidden comments” button.
Also, Instagram it has also changed its comment posting function, so when it detects a potentially offensive message, Instagram will display a warning message before it is posted.
The pop-up message informs users that if they post a negative comment, it will probably be hidden and that Instagram may make the decision to delete the user’s account, following further investigations.
“Potentially offensive consequences”
“These new warnings allow people to take a moment to reflect on their words after the potential consequences of posting their comment are exposed.” said Instagram in his ad.
“Since launching the comment warning, I’ve noticed that if you remind people of the consequences of aggression on Instagram and provide real-time feedback as I write the comment, you can change your behavior online.”
Instagram did not provide information on what kind of comments or languages will be targeted by the removal from the platform. The platform automatically deletes pornographic posts and comments, which encourage organized crime or physical threats.
Twitter’s policy is to remove posts that “want or instigate death, serious bodily harm or fatal illness against anyone.”
While Instagram hopes to minimize inappropriate comments, Facebook has been criticized this year for the way it handles hate speech.
Various civil rights groups said in July that Facebook had not done enough to ban or delete posts about election misinformation, vaccinations, white supremacy or violent conspiracy theories.
A group of twenty state attorneys general also called on Facebook to do more to combat hate speech. Such concerns have prompted major companies such as Adidas, Coca-Cola and Starbucks to boycott the social media giant.
Facebook said in August that it was investing billions of dollars to remove hate speech from its platform and deleted more than 22 million negative or harmful posts.
