ADO Den Haag bizarrely reached the second round of the tournament for the TOTO KNVB Cup on Wednesday. The team from The Hague defeated Sparta on penalties (5-3), after it had come to 1-1 in the last minute of injury time in regular time by a goal from keeper Luuk Koopmans.

Also Emmen and Heracles through

Danzell Gravenberch seemed to be the match winner in the Cars Jeans Stadium for a long time. The attacker cut in from the right six minutes before half time and left Koopmans without a chance with a nice bang in the intersection.

However, the same Koopmans became the hero of ADO in the absolute final phase, by heading in a corner from John Goossens in the fourth minute of injury time and thus forcing an extension.

There was no goal in that extension, which meant that penalties had to be the decision. Bart Vriends became the schlemier of the evening by shooting hard against the bar on behalf of Sparta. ADO stayed perfect from the spot, completing the miraculous breakaway.

After FC Utrecht, sc Heerenveen and VVV-Venlo, ADO is now the fourth Eredivisie club in the last 32 in the cup tournament. Ajax, Feyenoord, PSV and AZ only join later because of their European obligations.

Sparta has been waiting for a victory for eight months due to the defeat. The last victory of the Rotterdammers dates from March 1, partly due to the shutdown of last season due to the corona virus. Then FC Emmen was defeated 5-1 in the Eredivisie at Het Kasteel. Since then, the team from Rotterdam has been without a win for 241 days in a row, including practice matches.

In addition to ADO, FC Emmen and Heracles Almelo also qualified for the second round of the KNVB Cup. The team from Drenthe narrowly beat FC Eindhoven (2-0) with two goals from Michael de Leeuw, the Almelo team defeated Telstar 3-0.

At Heracles, trainer Frank Wormuth and players Robin Pröpper and Orestis Kiomourtzoglou were missing due to positive corona tests. Even without the three, however, the team was far too strong for Telstar. Sinan Bakis, Rai Vloet and Adrián Szöke signed for the goals in Almelo.

Later on Wednesday evening, Eredivisie clubs RKC Waalwijk and Fortuna Sittard can also qualify for the next round. The Waalwijkers take on SC Cambuur, the Limburgers visit fellow provincial Roda JC.
