What is the best virus scanner? And which one has the best price-quality ratio? Press and the Consumers’ Association provide an answer.
Dangers on the Internet come in many different forms and are increasingly common. With a good virus scanner you make it a lot more difficult for cyber criminals to penetrate your computer or laptop.
The Consumentenbond tests virus scanners for protection, ease of use and computer delay, among other things. A total of 23 virus scanners have been tested and are readily available.
The virus scanner from Eset came out as Best in the Test. The best value for money goes to Avira’s free virus scanner.
Eset is a virus scanner that has been doing well for years. It offers good protection against various forms of malware, such as ransomware, banking malware and phishing (fake websites).
Eset’s protection is a lot better than the protection offered by Windows Defender (Windows’ built-in virus scanner). For example, Windows Defender does not protect against phishing. Your browser does offer some protection against phishing, but less well than a separate virus scanner.
The Eset program is also very user-friendly. The menu is clear and the messages you receive, for example in the event of an infection, are clear. Furthermore, Eset slows down your computer hardly or not at all.
The downside is that this paid virus scanner actually offers little extra protection over the free Best Buy. The biggest advantage of Eset is that you are not bothered by advertising and promotion.
This free virus scanner is not inferior to that of Eset in terms of protection. The protection is therefore also a lot better than that of Windows Defender. Avira also hardly slows down your computer.
A disadvantage is that you do not receive technical support with this free virus scanner. You cannot contact them by e-mail or telephone if you have any questions or problems.
But the biggest drawback is the advertising. Avira is constantly trying to persuade you to purchase the paid version and that can be quite annoying. The paid version would provide extra protection and you can then take advantage of additional tools such as VPN and PC optimization. These extras are disappointing in reality. The protection of the free variant is comparable to the paid variant. VPN is by no means useful for everyone and the PC optimization usually yields little result.
