Erik ten Hag is confident that he can achieve a good result with Ajax against Liverpool on Wednesday at the start of the Champions League season. The coach sees opportunities against the English superpower.

‘Don’t expect another Liverpool without Van Dijk’

“I think Liverpool are the best team in the world. Even though they now have some setbacks with injuries, they can absorb that. Even though the defeat against Aston Villa (7-2, ed.) Shows that they are not infallible”, said Ten Hag on Tuesday at his press moment.

“In any case, I want to see a brave Ajax against Liverpool. A team that plays with self-confidence and that can implement the principles that we have agreed upon in the field.”

Ten Hag did not dare to say to what extent the players of Ajax are attuned to each other. “In the past few months we have gotten our playing principles into the team. Whether we are also at the place where we want to be in terms of level? That is hypothetical. You never know.”

Ten Hag cannot have Antony and Jurriën Timber on Wednesday, while Liverpool with Virgil van Dijk must miss an important player. However, the Ajax coach does not necessarily see that as an advantage.

“I don’t expect any other Liverpool without Van Dijk. Their game principles are so hammered in that it doesn’t matter whether doll A or doll B is there. It will not change my battle plan, maybe only in detail”, he said.

“The shape of the day will be important. We know the fans will be with us. Maybe not in the stadium, but behind the television. A large part of the Netherlands will watch us on the couch.”

Ajax-Liverpool starts on Wednesday at 9 p.m. At the same time, the kick-off is at FC Midtjylland-Atalanta, the other match in group D.
