On January 24th, a briefing will be held by Media Center Ukraine - Ukrinform on the topic of "Propaganda in a Smartphone: Has Telegram Become a Breeding Ground for Russian Propaganda?". The event will feature a number of speakers, including Svitlana Slipchenko, Head of the VoxCheck project, Myroslava Markova, VoxCheck Analyst, Vadym Misky, Program Director at the Detector Media NGO, Maryna Vorotyntseva, Senior Analyst with the Center for Countering Disinformation at the NSDC, and Pavlo Belousov, Expert at the School of Digital Security DSS380.
The discussion will focus on topics such as how to identify a Telegram channel that spreads malign disinformation, what are the main narratives and techniques of Russian propaganda on Telegram, and what Russian propaganda narratives may become popular in 2023. Additionally, the team from VoxCheck will present their research on disinformation via Telegram, which analyzed more than 5,500 messages from almost 60 Russian and pro-Russian Telegram channels, identifying 19 main disinformation narratives.
The use of Telegram as a platform for Russian propaganda is of particular concern due to the fact that it is the main source of news for many Ukrainians. Unlike other social media platforms, Telegram is not heavily moderated, allowing more freedom for propagandists to influence the population. The event will be held offline, with journalists able to ask questions in person and in the YouTube chat. It will also be broadcast on Ukrinform's YouTube channel.
This event is an important step in raising awareness of the issue of Russian propaganda on Telegram and the need to counter it. It will also provide a platform for experts to discuss strategies and solutions for countering Russian propaganda, as well as for journalists to gain a better understanding of the topic. By gaining a better understanding of the issue, Ukrainians can be better equipped to identify and counter Russian propaganda, ultimately leading to a more informed public.
