The previous two-liter, 200-horsepower boxer engine has been replaced by a 2.4-liter, 231-horsepower unit, but refuting previous speculations, the Subaru BRZ still doesn’t use a turbocharger. As a result of the modifications, the center of gravity has been deepened, the maximum torque of the engine rotating up to 7000 rpm is 249 Nm (+ 15%), while maintaining the mass at a level similar to the previous series (up to 1250 kg with manual transmission). The transmission can be a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic, the latter with a new Sport mode with reversing support gas injection and a function to prevent engagement in corners.
All this obviously results in enjoyable handling, even more dynamic acceleration than before, but the driving dynamics data are not yet available.
Like the format of the block, the design has been preserved by the model: we could easily believe the model, which will be available next autumn, as a strong crease seam, but the 50 percent increased torsional rigidity of the body reveals that it is a new construction. MacPherson front, double wishbone suspension. The sensitivity of the stability control systems can be adjusted in five levels, including full shut-off.
The wheelbase increased by 0.5 centimeters and the overall length by 3.0 centimeters; the 4265-centimeter car point is one centimeter lower than it is today – so the proportions haven’t changed frantically either. The most striking novelty is the air outlet behind the front wheels, which is designed to reduce air resistance.
There are four racing tires in the boot – obviously if we fold down the rear necessities. A more important novelty in the interior is the completely redesigned driving environment. The instrument cluster is a brand new 7-inch display that can simulate the tachometer as a primary source of information in both analog and digital formats. There is also a water thermometer, current meter or accelerometer, these can be displayed on the side.
The center console features an 8-inch touchscreen that supports all modern phone sync features, while the automatic shift versions are also equipped with Subaru EyeSight driver support technologies. The clamshell seats are decorated with red stitches.
The Subaru BRZ will be made in Japan, with North American sales starting in September 2021. There is no information on European sales or whether there will be a Toyota GT86 version again – it would make sense, as the engine continues to use Toyota’s dual-injection system.
