He MotoGP Aragon Grand Prix lived a full of successes of the Spanish pilots when registering the Alex Rins’ first win of the season (Suzuki GSX RR), ahead of Alex Marquez (Repsol Honda RC 213 V), which achieved its second consecutive podium of the season, and third place in Joan Mir (Suzuki GSX RR), which allows you to become new leader of the classification provisional world cup.
The eighteenth place of Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha YZR M 1), a gloomy shadow of the one who had been world leader until now, allowed Joan Mir to take first place in the championship with 121 points, six more than Quartararo, twelve compared to Maverick Viñales (Yamaha YZR M 1), which finished fourth, and fifteen compared to the Italian Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Desmosedici GP20), who despite bad training sessions and a lot of tension in the Ducati workshops throughout the weekend, “saved the furniture” more than decently by finishing seventh.
Maverick Viñales achieved his goal proclaimed throughout the weekend by being the fastest at the time of departure, in which he surprised both the French Fabio Quartararo and the Italian Franco Morbidelli, the two riders of the Yamaha Petronas team, with the official Suzuki GSX RR riders behind them, Alex Rins and Joan Mir.
El Italian Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Desmosedici GP20), que did not have very lucky workouts, had a good start, in which he quickly recovered five positions to place eighth, although in the second round was surpassed by the Spanish Alex Márquez (Repsol Honda RC 213 V).
Viñales had already warned that if he could leave quickly and enter the curve at the end of the starting straight first he had a lot of chances to set his pace and he was the one who imposed the race conditions on the rest of his rivals and that’s how it was, because on the third lap the official Yamaha rider already I had half a second of advantage about Quartararo and Rins, who starred in a spectacular interior about Morbidelli.
The Italian Francesco “Pecco” Bagnaia (Ducati Desmosedici GP20) was the first victim of the race rolling on the floor on the fourth turn, in which Alex Rins set the first fastest lap of the race and approached the circuit record, which since 2015 has been held by the Spanish Jorge Lorenzo when he was a Yamaha rider.
With Maverick Viñales with a few meters of advantage, behind him was the duo formed by Quartararo and Rins, with another more numerous group behind led by Morbidelli, Mir and the Australian Jack Miller (Ducati Desmosedici GP20) and the one who was also Alex Márquez, the Japanese Takaaki Nakagami (Honda RC 213 V) and the two official Ducati riders, Andrea Dovizioso and Danilo Petrucci.
At the end of the fifth lap Alex Rins saw that Fabio Quartararo went under braking on the entrance curve to the finish line and did not hesitate for a moment to overcome it to try to go after Maverick Viñales, while the Repsol Honda rider overtook Nakagami to hunt down Jack Miller and get over it shortly after, although the Australian tried to return the overtaking speed on the back straight, without success.
Shortly after, on lap eight, it was Joan Mir who starred in a spectacular double overtaking the Yamaha riders, Quartararo and Morbidelli, to try to go in the wake of their teammate Alex Rins in the hunt for Maverick Viñales.
Hunting for Morbidelli
In the ninth lap Rins achieved his goal by overtaking Viñales, when behind Alex Márquez also gave a good account of Quartararo to get fifth and hunt down Morbidelli, who he beat a lap later on the inside at the entrance curve to the straight finish line, with which at that time four Spanish pilots were leading the competition.
Alex Rins and Maverick Viñales had a few meters ahead of Joan Mir and Alex Márquez, while the world leader was sixth but losing “bellows” too quickly, “cuddled” by Nakagami, Miller, and Dovizioso, who was then shooting ninth.
Rins tried to put land in between and got an advantage of just over six tenths of a second over a trio formed by Viñales, Mir and Alex Márquez, who at the end of the straight he hurried the braking to overcome on the inside to the Yamaha rider and leave “disheveled” in search of the two Suzuki riders, and with Fabio Quartararo increasingly away from head positions, of the points, and also of the possibility of defending his leadership in the world-wide one.
Five laps from the end Alex Márquez overtook Joan Mir to start the hunt for alex rins, until that moment solid leader, although the pace of the Repsol Honda rider was at that time more than consistent and it was not long before he literally stuck to the slipstream of his rival’s Suzuki.
Two laps from the end, at the entrance to the finish line, a scare from the Repsol Honda caused Alex Márquez to lose direct contact with Alex Rins, a meager difference but enough to claim his first victory Suzuki’s rider of the season, with Joan Mir in third place and the new leader of the championship as his rival Fabio Quartararo did not score a single point.
Maverick Viñales got the fourth position, with Pol Espargaró (KTM RC 16) twelfth, ahead of his brother Aleix (Aprilia RS-GP) and Iker Lecuona (KTM RC 16) and with Tito Rabat (Ducati Desmosedici GP19), 20th.
