In the last 2 years we have seen that many brands have joined the trend for True Wireless headphones, from my point of view Sony is one of the manufacturers that has one of the best models of today such as WF-1000XM3, which have a very good sound along with spectacular noise cancellation. However, the Japanese firm recently released the WF-XB700, which have a very different approach to the WF-1000XM3 for better and for worse.
I have been testing the WF-XB700 for a few days, and I can tell you what I liked the most and what I hope Sony improves for the next generation, all with the purpose that you can have a better purchase decision.
Some brutal bass that you will not find elsewhere
The WF-XB700 are a model of the extra bass family, so from here we can say that the headphones are made for users who prefer deep bass in their headphones, something that can be beneficial for electronic music or some rock tracks and metal.
I can safely say that the WF-XB700 have the best bass in True Wireless headphones, in fact, they exceeded my expectations, so if you are a person who loves bass and wants to feel your head rumble with music that listen, these are the headphones you’re looking for.
The bad thing is that such impressive basses seem to have neglected other aspects of the sound, because although they are not heard badly, the truth is that the tuning is not at the level of other models of the brand such as the aforementioned WF- 1000XM3, and unlike what happened to me with the bass, here the sound in general did not meet my expectations, but fortunately you can use applications like Wavelet to equalize the headphones to your liking.
They are large but very stable headphones
The size of the WF-XB700 is important, to the naked eye and inside the box they look an average size, but when you take them out you notice that they are larger than most headphones of this type. However, that is not a bad thing, because the design they have allows them to fit perfectly in the ear without the need for a hook or other type of piece that gets stuck in any part of the ear.
The truth is that they work very well for running, jumping and going from here to there, in fact, they have IPX4 certification that makes them resistant to sweat and rainwater. In the same way, they have several interchangeable gummies so you can choose the one that best fits your ear, but we will talk about that later.
What about noise cancellation?
Unfortunately the WF-XB700 do not have active noise cancellation, in part this makes the price lower compared to the WF-1000XM3, the downside is that these last headphones can often be found on sale for about 3,500 MXN, and the WF-XB700 have an official price of 3,999 MXN, so they are quite expensive compared to models from firms like Huawei that offer better sound and active noise cancellation.
When it comes to passive cancellation, the truth is very good if we choose the correct gummies to fit the ears well, so once those powerful basses are played, the loudest noises from the outside are hardly heard.
Everything is compensated with a good autonomy
In addition to noise cancellation, autonomy is one of the points where Sony usually stands out a lot, and here we have up to 18 hours of music playback, which is also complemented by fast charging, so in about 10 minutes we can use the headphones for about 1 hour.
What I could never do on Android or iOS was use the Sony Headphones application that I could use with the WF-1000XM3 to check the battery of the headphones, so you will always have to be guessing how much battery the box has left and to each headset, although fortunately Android and iOS do the task to Sony because they include their own technology to show the battery of the headphones, but not that of the box or that of each of the headphones.
Physical buttons instead of touch control
Another thing that did not convince me was the playback controls, I am not saying they are bad, in fact, they are quite complete and allow you to change songs, pause and play, activate the phone assistant or adjust the volume. The downside is that being a button requires pressing it, and if you are running or doing something else it is more difficult than just touching the touch zone to activate the gesture.
Obviously this has its advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is that accidental touches or position adjustment will not activate any action, and the disadvantage is that in certain situations it will be much more difficult to apply an action without trying more than once, stopping to do it, or moving the headset from our ear.
Should you buy them?
I think that in general the WF-XB700 are a very good option that is clearly focused on those who want to exercise with them, and that the first thing they do when buying headphones is to boost the bass.
If you are looking for a great sound quality I think there are better options for a similar price, but I must also say that during the Good End I have seen this model for about 1,999 MXN, which seems to me a quite attractive and convenient price for everything. They offer, but if you are willing to spend at least 4 thousand pesos and want something from Sony, I think it is much better to hunt down an offer for the WF-1000XM3.
