Trainer Arne Slot thinks it is a shame that AZ was unable to do much against Real Sociedad on Thursday evening in the Europa League. The leader in Spain was far too strong for the Alkmaarders, although it only became 1-0 in San Sebastian.
“We knew that Real Sociedad would play with very high pressure”, Slot said after the game NH Sport. “With the depth of Myron Boadu and Jesper Karlsson I hoped to be able to hurt them. It is a pity that that did not work out. I expected more from it.”
It was thanks to goalkeeper Marco Bizot that AZ was not yet behind in the Basque Country halfway through. Real Sociedad took the lead in the 58th minute via Portu and AZ could not complain that it stayed that way.
“The attacking players have fought not to get any goals against. In addition to labor, we needed luck and an excellent keeper for that,” said Slot, who with his team is still at the top in group F. Napoli and Real Sociedad, however, also have six points from three games.
“We knew in advance that we have two extremely strong opponents in the group. We have to win one of the coming home games anyway. That is a challenge, but we have also won against Napoli”, Slot remained hopeful.
AZ continues the group stage on November 26 with a home game against Sociedad and receives Napoli a week later.
