The trip to Spain was completed in the worst possible way for Panathinaikos OPAP. After the defeat from Valencia, the “greens” lost, with their hands down, and from the upper Basconia with 93-72, something that will force them to return to our country with 0/2, four consecutive defeats and a total of six in eight games in the Euroleague.
Giorgos Vovoras’ team showed a willingness to fight in the first half of the match, but from the 25th minute onwards … it lost the field. Many mistakes, poor defensive function, missed shots, lack of ideas and intensity were the main pieces of the “puzzle” of the “clover” in a very bad night, from which only Ioannis Papapetrou and George Papagiannis survived.
On the contrary, the Basques were excellent and took full advantage of the poor performance of their opponents. Dusko Ivanovic’s team went up to 4-4, starring Luka Vildoza, Alec Peters, Pieria Henry and Tony Dzekiri.
The trick with Bohoridis, Nedovic in the positions of the main guards caught and Panathinaikos OPAP started the match impressively. The six points of the Serb led to an initial lead of eight points (2-10, 3 ‘), but followed by a “dead” period and many mistakes (5 in ten minutes), which allowed Baskonia to balance, to “run” its own series ( 9-0) and take the lead (11-10, 6 ‘).
The “greens” responded immediately with a belt in the defense and from there they found psychology in the offensive part, something that gave them the reins again (20-23, 10 ‘).
Some mistakes on the part of the “clover” gave opportunities and rhythm to the Basques, who started the second period with a series of 7-0 (27-23, 11 ‘). The reaction was immediate from the bench, with a lower figure (Kaselakis at “4”, August at “5”) and a return to the zone, which allowed Panathinaikos OPAP to cover the bad period at the beginning of the quarter and regain the lead (31 -32, 15 ‘).
However, the tempo slowed down, due to the targeting of Ivanovic and the many fouls, something that favored the more concentrated Basconia, which took advantage of the failure of the guests for +10 of the 19th minute (44-34) and +7 at the end of the half. (46-39).
The first minutes of the third period rolled in the pattern of the first half. Right choices from the Basques, mistakes from the “greens” and a steady lead for the hosts. The outbreak of the “clover” came after 24 ‘, when there was a very clear improvement in the defense and in the part of rebounds, resulting in 50-49 in the scoreboard.
Nevertheless, the … roller-coaster of Panathinaikos OPAP continued and another dead period on the part of the six-time European champions allowed the hosts to find easy points with Vildoza, Peters and close the quarter to +8 (66- 58).
The “hot” Vildoza was responsible for the biggest lead of the Spaniards in the match (69-58, 31 ‘) and the fourth quarter started in the worst possible way for Panathinaikos OPAP.
Peters increased the difference to 14 (72-58) and the hosts seemed more and more comfortable on the floor, as the guests seemed to have lost their concentration.
This was also seen in the series of the Basques, which brought them to +20 (80-60, 35 ‘). The match ended somewhere there, since there was no going back…
The quarters: 20-23, 46-39, 66-58, 93-72
