McLaren CEO Andreas Seidl summed up the results of the race in Imola, talking about his impressions of the two-day weekend and the draft calendar for 2021 …
Andreas Seidl: “Both drivers are happy with the car, but in qualifying we could not show what it is capable of. It was difficult for the riders to drive all three sectors perfectly, they showed the ninth and tenth times, which influenced the race, most of which they spent in traffic.
We have made progress compared to last year’s car, the team is working more efficiently – all this instills optimism, but we have strong rivals who also do not stand still. It takes more time to take the next step forward.
I have said more than once that we have an important advantage in the struggle for positions in the constructors’ championship – we have two excellent racers. In most Grand Prix they both made it to the qualifying finals and achieved excellent results in the races. They help us in the fight for the third place in the constructors’ championship.
I liked the two-day weekend format – its compactness. In addition, the team appreciated the new challenge when it was necessary to deal with the car in an hour and a half of training. The decision about this depends on contracts with promoters and TV companies. If this format helps us reduce costs, and mechanics and engineers can spend more time with their families, then we will definitely support this idea.
But I do not like the calendar of 23 races – in my opinion, 20 Grand Prix is enough. I preferred to have a rotation principle – so that every year we come to different tracks. “
