Luuk Koopmans saw a dream come true against Sparta Rotterdam in the first round of the TOTO KNVB Cup on Wednesday evening. The ADO Den Haag goalkeeper headed the 1-1 deep in injury time and saw his team triumph in the Cars Jeans Stadium after penalties.
‘They can no longer say that I’m not a cup keeper’
“To be honest, I have done it before before. But as a goalkeeper, scoring is something you only do once in your career”, a beaming Koopmans said after the match in The Hague. FOX Sports.
The 26-year-old Koopmans ran freely towards the first post in the 94th minute and beautifully headed the corner of substitute Bilal Ould-Chikh into the far corner. In extra time it remained 1-1, after which ADO Den Haag took the longest in the decisive penalty series due to a miss by Bart Vriends.
“I was already running towards the center line when we got a corner and the trainer said: go along”, Koopmans looked back on his historic header goal. “I was not picked up by the defenders of Sparta and thought: what does the striker always do? Run in and nod. The ball was nice.”

Koopmans follows in the footsteps of Martin Hansen with his goal, who scored with his heel in the home game against PSV in August 2015 as goalkeeper of ADO. Due to his brilliant goal, the Hagenaren took a point at the time (2-2).
“That was also a nice goal, but mine was of course better”, Koopmans laughed, who, unlike many other clubs in the Eredivisie, is allowed to play in the cup tournament. “This is different at Sparta, for example. But they can no longer say that I am not a cup keeper.”
Michiel Kramer has another role in mind for his goalkeeper after the hero role of Koopmans. “He doesn’t need koples, so maybe he should be in the lead”, Kramer joked. “With Hansen we have indeed already had a scoring goalkeeper, but this one didn’t look wrong either.”
