Perr Schuurs is disappointed that he played a part in the goal of Liverpool in the 0-1 lost Champions League game in the Johan Cruijff ArenA on Wednesday. The Ajax defender let Sadio Mané slip, after which Nicolás Tagliafico worked the Senegalese cross into his own goal.

‘Continue this line’

“It was unfortunate”, says Schuurs about the moment in the 35th minute. “It started with me and it ended in a goal that made us lose. That’s not good.”

For twenty-year-old Schuurs, who is a regular base player at Ajax for the first time this season, it was a matter of switching against 28-year-old Mané, who is of a different caliber than the attackers in the Eredivisie.

“He’s fast and strong, one of the best forwards in the world. Like all of Liverpool is top, but I think we resisted that well. It just didn’t deliver. We deserved a point.”

Ajax had enough chances to score against the Premier League champion, but Quincy Promes failed face to face with goalkeeper Adrián, a bet by Dusan Tadic was taken off the line and a hard shot by Davy Klaassen ended up on the post.

“We should have scored at least once”, says Schuurs. “That feeling dominates with me and I think also with the rest of the team. There was more in it, but we did not play badly. We have to continue this line and then we can make it difficult for every team.”

The other match in group D was won by Atalanta 0-4 at FC Midtjylland. Duván Zapata, Alejandro Gómez, Luis Muriel and Aleksey Miranchuk scored for the Italian club, which will be Ajax’s next opponent in the Champions League in Bergamo next Tuesday.
