Mohamed Ihattaren has apologized to trainer Roger Schmidt. The PSV midfielder was left out of the starting eleven for the game against FC Groningen (1-3) on Sunday because of his attitude during training this week.
“After the international obligations, he did not train as it should be when he returned. Mo knows that himself. He has apologized and that has now resolved it,” Schmidt said at his press conference at the Hitachi Capital Mobility Stadium on Sunday after the game.
Ihattaren was for the first time in the selection of the Dutch national team for last week’s Nations League matches against Poland and Italy, but he did not get any playing minutes in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. When he returned to Eindhoven, the midfielder did not show his best side.
Ihattaren was reportedly even expelled from training by Schmidt because of his attitude. Despite this week’s mishap, the German coach did not want to tackle his eighteen-year-old top talent too hard.
“Mo is a great player and a good person. Sometimes this happens and then it is important as a coach to set boundaries. Mo has understood the message and he has given everything to Groningen,” said the German, who won Ihattaren in the 71st minute. input for Mauro Júnior.
PSV then already led 1-2 in Groningen and closed the game just before time via Cody Gakpo, who made his second goal of the afternoon. Based on goal difference, the team from Eindhoven occupied second place in the Eredivisie after the first round.
