PSV coach Roger Schmidt is seriously concerned about Maximiliano Romero’s injury. The Argentinian dropped out early on Thursday in the 1-5 away game against the Slovenian NS Mura in the third heat of the Europa League.

‘I’m glad we stayed focused’

“We hope it is not a very serious injury, but I am worried”, Schmidt said at the press conference after the game. “It’s very sad for Maxi and us that he dropped out so early.”

Romero made his basic debut for PSV in Slovenia, but he had to leave after eleven minutes with a knee injury. According to Schmidt, the 21-year-old attacker, who was hired out to his old club Vélez Sarsfield last season, deserved to appear at the kickoff.

“He was in good condition and worked very hard for this opportunity. He enforced this during training,” said the German. “He also started the race very well. I saw a sharp Maxi, but unfortunately he retired quickly.”

Despite the injury of Romero, who will be examined in the hospital in Eindhoven on Friday, PSV recorded a big victory over Mura. The Slovenians did restore the balance after the opening goal of Donyell Malen, but they could not make it difficult for the Eindhoven team afterwards.

Mauro Júnior quickly brought PSV back the lead after Mura’s equalizer, after which the visitors secured their place in the play-offs for the Europa League in the second half via two hits from Cody Gakpo and a goal from Malen.

“We were well prepared and I am glad we stayed focused,” said Schmidt. “Even after the 1-1 we did not give up. I think we played well afterwards and showed few doubts.
